Creative direction and stage concept for Ellen Krauss’ 21-date Romeo tour.
The stage used suspended objects, lights and props to create a strange, theatrical setting around Ellen and her band.
CONCEPT
Three initial directions explored ways of making the stage itself part of the performance. The selected concept, Romeo, used physical objects and practical light rather than screens or conventional scenic elements.
We took familiar objects out of context, added lighting and strange features to them, and hung them above Ellen and the band.
BUILDING ROMEO
Ellen and I sourced the objects together, primarily from SVT’s prop collection, along with pieces we bought and modified. The final set combined a giant lampshade, oversized light bulb, sword, rose, megaphone, owl and a birdcage containing a silver torso, with statues, candles and smaller objects scattered across the stage.
Many of the suspended pieces lit up, while vertical LED tubes were attached to the suspension lines.
ON STAGE
The setup had to work for both concert halls and smaller rock venues. The same collection of illuminated objects travelled with the tour, with the composition adapted to each stage by the crew.
